Once fue el musical de moda la temporada pasada en Nueva York, arrasando en los premios Tony y con una gran acogida por parte de la crítica. Tras una exitosa temporada ha cruzado el charco para estrenarse en el West End londinense con un nuevo reparto. Los personajes principales, Guy y Girl, son interpretados en esta ocasión por DECLAN BENNETT (Taboo, Rent, American Idiot) y ZRINKA CVITESIC.

Hemos tenido la suerte de que el mismísimo Declan Bennett nos haya podido dedicar un rato y muy amablemente nos haya contestado unas preguntas para que lo podamos conocer mejor.

BiS: Empezaste tu carrera como parte de una banda, ¿siempre supiste que te querías dedicar a la música? ¿Cuándo decidiste que querías actuar?

DB: Siempre he querido trabajar en la música, desde que estaba en el colegio. También he sido fan del teatro desde siempre pero mi carrera musical despegó antes. Cuando salí de la banda, seguí haciendo música pero me ofrecieron un papel en Taboo, lo que inició mi carrera en el teatro.

BiS: Más tarde, en 2002, interpretaste el papel de Guru Dazzle en Taboo y después pasaste a interpretar el papel de Billy. ¿Cómo es la progresión de formar parte del reparto a protagonizar un musical nominado a varios premios Olivier?

DB: Fue genial. Me encantó mi viaje con Taboo. Me ayudó a volver a despertar mi amor por el teatro mientras mantenía vivo mi amor por la música, ya que el espectáculo estaba basado en un artista tan conocido. Boy George y yo conectamos profundamente a través de nuestro amor por la música y hemos seguido trabajando juntos después de que la producción se terminara. Era un gran espectáculo y tuvimos un gran temporada.

BiS: También has interpretado a Roger en Rent, tanto en la gira por Estados Unidos como en Broadway al acabar esta. ¿Es muy diferente formar parte de una compañía de gira por Inglaterra y Estados unidos?¿Qué recuerdas de aquella época?

DB: Reino Unido y Estados Unidos son lugares muy diferentes y una gira por EEUU se siente mucho más grande geográficamente. La gira por EEUU de RENT fue un enorme punto de inflexión en mi vida, estar fuera de casa y recorriendo este nuevo país del que me enamoré y acabé fijando allí mi residencia permanente. Solamente experimenté una gira corta, de unos pocos meses en Reino Unido con Taboo y viajábamos sobre una hora o dos para  llegar a cada ciudad, mientras que en EEUU viajábamos alrededor de quince o dieciséis horas para llegar a un nuevo destino.

BiS: En 2010 pudimos verte junto a John Gallagher Jr., Michael Esper (entre otros) en American Idiot en Broadway. ¿Cómo es compartir escenario con alguien como Billie Joe Armstrong [GreenDay]?¿Puedes contarnos alguna anécdota de aquella época?

DB: Fue una pasada. De nuevo, me sentí muy afortunado de formar parte de una pieza teatral tan monumental y cuando Billy decidió que quería formar parte del espectáculo fue un momento genial. Él es un gran intérprete y una vez nos liamos en el escenario. Jaja.

BiS: Por aquella época lanzaste tu último álbum “Record:BREAKUP”, con la colaboración de alguno de tus compañeros. ¿Cómo surgió la idea? ¿Qué nos puedes contar de este álbum?

DB: El disco fue diseñado como un álbum conceptual siguiendo las últimas semanas de una relación. Lo hice de tal forma que el álbum entero tiene huecos muy pequeños entre canciones. Fue hecho para escucharlo como una pieza completa más que como 12 canciones separadas. Record: BREAKUP es un guiño a esta relación que rompió todos los récords y después fue “grabada”.

BiS: Ahora mismo estás protagonizando el musical ONCE, ganador de varios premios Tony, en Londres. ¿Habías visto la película o la producción de broadway antes de involucrarte en el proyecto? ¿Qué pensaste al verlo?

DB: He visto ambos y soy un gran fan de los dos. La versión teatral halaga a la película de forma brillante manteniendo su propia esencia. Pero es la música la que realmente conduce ambas piezas. Además, soy un enorme fan de Glen Hansard.

BiS: Hoy en día, parece que si un espectáculo no tiene unos grandes e innovadores efectos especiales o coreografías espectaculares no puede triunfar. Sin embargo, Once ganó 8 premios Tony y tuvo una gran acogida entre la crítica. ¿Cuál dirías que es su secreto?¿Qué es lo que crees que más atrae de la historia?

DB: Su simplicidad es su secreto. Once no intenta ser nada de lo que no es. Es sutíl, tranquilo y honesto, y no adorna innecesariamente. Es una simple historia con la que se puede identificar la mayoría de la gente. Es el poder de la música y los sentimientos de desesperación y amor son las cosas que nos conmueven a todos.

BiS: ¿Qué nos puedes contar de Guy (Chico)? ¿En qué os parecéis?

DB: Definitivamente he experimentado sentimientos de desesperanza y sentir que no estás siendo escuchado. Es un mundo duro y todo músico quiere encontrar su público, con lo que me puedo identificar completamente. También he encontrado momentos en los que tu música y tu creatividad te eleva a lugares increíbles y sientes que es lo único para lo que estás aquí.

BiS: Acabáis de estrenar en el Phoenix Theatre de Londres. ¿Cómo está siendo la recepción por ahora?

DB: Las audiencias aquí están siendo increíbles y muy entregadas. Cada noche ha sido genial ver al público tan abierto a esta pieza.

BiS: ¿Cómo fue la noche del estreno?

DB: Genial. Intensa. Con muchos nervios. Ebria.

BiS: Y, finalmente, ¿qué papeles quedan todavía en tu lista de deseos?¿De qué espectáculo te gustaría formar parte?

DB: Soy tan afortunado que he tachado todos los cuadros en mi lista de deseos ;-)

Once was the top musical of the past season on broadway, beating every other show at the Tony awards and with a great critical acclaim. After a successful first year on broadway they've crossed the pond to open on the West End with a new cast. Starring as Guy and Girl are DECLAN BENNETT and ZRINCA CVITESIC.

We've had the great luck of having the very same Declan Bennett to kindly answer some of our questions so that we can know him a little better.

BiS: You first started your career as part of a boyband, did you always know you wanted to do music? When did you decide you wanted to go into acting?

DB: I always wanted to work in music since I was at school. I was always a fan of theatre too but my music career took off first. When I left the band I carried on making music but was offered a role in Taboo which kicked off my theatre career.

BiS: Later, in 2002, you originated the role of Guru Dazzle in Taboo and then took over the role of Billy. How is the progression from being an ensemble member to starring an Olivier-nominated show?

DB: It was great. I loved my journey with Taboo. It helped reawaken my love for theatre whilst keeping my love for music alive because the show was based on such a famous artist. Me and Boy George connected deeply through our love of music and have continued to work with each other since Taboo closed. It was a great show and we had a great run.

BiS: You’ve also played Roger in Rent, both in the US National Tour and on Broadway afterwards. Is it very different being part of a touring company in UK and US? What do you recall from that time?

DB: The UK and US are very different places and a US tour feels much bigger geographically, naturally because its such a big place. The US tour of RENT was a massive turning point in my life, being away from home and touring this new country that I fell in love with and ended up basing myself there permanently. I’ve only experienced a short few month tour in the UK with taboo and we would travel a hour or 2 at a time to each city. In the US we would travel for 15/16 hours to get to each new city.

BiS: In 2010 we got to see you alongside John Gallagher Jr., Michael Esper (among others) in American Idiot on Broadway. How is it sharing the stage with someone like Billie Joe Armstrong? Can you tell us any anecdote from that time?

DB: It was awesome. Again, I felt very lucky to be part of such a monumental piece of theatre and when Billy decided he wanted to be a part of the show it was such a great moment. He’s an incredible performer and we made out on stage once. Haha.

BiS: During your time there you released your last album “Record:BREAKUP”, with the collaboration of some if your castmates. How did you come up with the idea? What can you tell us about this album?  -I must admit Love Wins and Freer are two of the most played songs on my iPod-

DB: The album was designed to be a concept album charting the final few weeks of a relationship. I made it in such a way that the whole album had very few gaps between songs so it was made to be listened to as one whole piece rather than 12 separate songs.  record:BREAKUP is a nod to this relationship being one that broke all the records and then being ‘recorded’.

BiS: Right now you’re starring the Tony-winning musical ONCE in London. Had you seen the movie or the Broadway version before being involved in the production? If so, what did you think of it?

DB: I’ve seen both and am a huge fan of both. The stage version compliments the movie so brilliantly whilst taking on it own soul but the music really drives both pieces and I am a massive fan of Glen Hansard.

BiS: Nowadays, it may seem that if a show doesn’t have big innovative special effects or spectacular choreographies it won’t have a chance to success, yet this show won 8 Tony awards and had a great critical acclaim. What would you say it’s its secret? Once is a story of heartbreak, what do you think is most appealing about the story?

DB: Its simplicity is its secret. Once doesn’t try and be anything it isn’t. It’s subtle and quiet and honest and doesn’t embellish unnecessarily. It’s a simple story that most people can identify with. The power of music and the feelings of despair and love are things that have touched all of us.

BiS: What can you tell us about Guy?  In which traits is he more similar to you?

DB: I’ve definitely experienced feelings of despair at not feeling like you are being heard. It’s a tough world and every musician just wants to find his audience which I can completely identify with. And I’ve also encountered moments where your music and creativity elevates you into incredible places and you feel like there is nothing else you are here to do.

BiS: You just opened at the Phoenix Theatre in London. How has the reception been so far? Is it very different the English audience from the American?

DB: The audiences here have been amazing and very giving. Every night has been great to see audiences be so open to this piece. 

BiS: How was the opening night?

DB: Great. Intense. Nerve wracking. Drunk.

BiS: And finally, which roles still remain on your wishlist? Which show would you love to be a part of?

DB: I am blessed to have ticked all the boxes on my wishlist ;-)
